California’s roads are among the busiest—and most dangerous—in the nation. Understanding accident statistics helps put the risks in perspective and underscores the importance of safe driving practices and knowing your legal rights if you’re injured. The following data comes from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), the California Highway Patrol, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Overview: California Traffic Accidents by the Numbers
California consistently ranks among the top states for traffic fatalities due to its large population, extensive highway system, and high volume of vehicle miles traveled.
According to California OTS data, traffic fatalities decreased nearly 11% from 4,539 in 2022 to 4,061 in 2023. While this decline is encouraging, it still means more than 11 people die on California roads every single day.
The 2023 Mileage Death Rate—fatalities per 100 million miles traveled—was 1.26, a 6% decrease from 1.34 in 2022. Despite improvements, California remains one of the deadliest states for drivers, second only to Texas in total traffic fatalities.
Beyond fatalities, California sees approximately 200,000 injury-causing accidents annually. When including minor collisions without injuries, the total number of crashes exceeds 500,000 per year.
Leading Causes of California Accidents
Understanding what causes accidents can help drivers avoid dangerous situations—and establishes the basis for negligence claims when crashes occur.
Speeding. Unsafe speed is the number one cause of accidents in California, implicated in roughly one-third of all crashes. Speed-related crashes account for approximately 35% of California’s traffic deaths, higher than the national average of 29%. Speeding reduces reaction time, increases stopping distance, and makes crashes more severe.
Impaired driving. Alcohol remains a persistent factor in fatal crashes. Alcohol-impaired driving fatalities (involving drivers with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08 or higher) totaled 1,355 in 2023, accounting for approximately one-third of all traffic deaths. Drug impairment is an emerging concern as well—over 50% of drivers killed in recent years tested positive for legal or illegal drugs.
Distracted driving. Distracted driving contributes to approximately 21% of crashes in California. The California Highway Patrol reports that roughly 96 people are killed and 9,700 injured each year in distracted driving incidents. Looking at a phone for just 5 seconds while driving at 55 mph means traveling the length of a football field without watching the road.
Failure to yield. Right-of-way violations cause a significant percentage of intersection crashes and are particularly dangerous for pedestrians and cyclists.
Improper turning. Unsafe lane changes and improper turns contribute to many collisions, especially in urban areas with heavy traffic.
Vulnerable Road Users
Pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists face disproportionate risks on California roads.
Pedestrian fatalities. Pedestrian deaths totaled 1,106 in 2023, a decrease of approximately 8.8% from 1,213 in 2022. Still, pedestrians account for more than one-quarter of all California traffic deaths. In 2024, over 12,000 pedestrians were either injured or killed in motor vehicle crashes across the state.
Bicycle fatalities. Cyclist deaths decreased approximately 20.8% from 183 in 2022 to 145 in 2023. However, bicycle accidents often result in serious injuries given the lack of protection cyclists have against motor vehicles.
Motorcycle fatalities. Motorcycle deaths decreased 10.2% from 649 in 2022 to 583 in 2023. Motorcyclists represent about 14% of California traffic fatalities. Deaths from not wearing a helmet decreased approximately 23% from 43 in 2022 to 33 in 2023.
Who Is Most at Risk
Accident statistics reveal patterns about which drivers face the highest risks.
Young drivers. Teen drivers (ages 15-20) involved in fatal crashes totaled 428 in 2023, a decrease of approximately 10% from 476 in 2022. Inexperience, risk-taking behavior, and distraction contribute to elevated crash rates among young drivers.
Drivers ages 25-34. This age group faces the highest overall risk of being involved in a car accident. In 2023, nearly 22% of all car crashes involved drivers from this age group.
Older adults. For older adults, the top causes of fatal and serious injury crashes include improper turning (18.2%), unsafe speed (15.8%), failure to yield right-of-way (19.8%), and pedestrian violations (10.8%).
Unrestrained occupants. Unrestrained passenger vehicle occupant fatalities decreased 8.6% from 853 in 2022 to 780 in 2023. Seat belts remain one of the most effective safety measures, with California’s seat belt usage rate exceeding 95%.
When Accidents Happen
Time of day significantly affects accident risk.
Peak danger hours. Most traffic fatalities in California occur between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. In 2023, 22.4% of all fatal crashes occurred during this evening rush hour period when traffic volume is high and drivers may be fatigued after work.
Weekend risks. Weekend evenings, particularly Friday and Saturday nights, see elevated rates of alcohol-involved crashes.
Holiday periods. Major holidays like New Year’s Eve, Fourth of July, and Thanksgiving weekend consistently show higher fatal crash rates.
Geographic Patterns
Accident rates vary significantly across California’s diverse geography.
Los Angeles. Los Angeles leads the state in total traffic crashes and fatalities. In 2024, L.A. recorded 256 traffic deaths—more than any other California city. The city also leads in alcohol-related accidents.
Urban vs. rural. While urban areas see more total crashes due to higher traffic volume, rural crashes often result in more severe injuries due to higher speeds and longer emergency response times.
Freeway dangers. California’s extensive freeway system sees a disproportionate share of high-speed, multi-vehicle collisions. Certain stretches of highway are particularly dangerous—see our guide to dangerous roads in California.
The Human and Financial Cost
Beyond statistics, every accident represents real human suffering.
Traffic crashes are a leading cause of death for Californians under 54. The economic cost of California traffic crashes exceeds billions of dollars annually when accounting for medical expenses, lost productivity, property damage, and emergency response costs.
For individuals, a serious accident can mean months or years of medical treatment, inability to work, chronic pain, and diminished quality of life. Families lose loved ones. Children lose parents. The ripple effects extend far beyond the immediate victims.
What These Statistics Mean for Accident Victims
If you’re injured in a California accident, you’re not alone—and you have legal rights. California law allows accident victims to seek compensation from negligent drivers for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other damages.
Under California’s comparative fault system, you can recover compensation even if you were partially at fault—though your recovery will be reduced by your percentage of responsibility.
The statute of limitations gives you two years from the date of injury to file a lawsuit. Acting promptly helps preserve evidence and protects your legal rights.
Protecting Yourself on California Roads
While you can’t control other drivers, you can reduce your own risk by never driving impaired by alcohol or drugs, putting your phone away while driving, obeying speed limits and adjusting for conditions, always wearing your seat belt, staying alert during high-risk hours (evening rush, weekends), and being especially cautious around pedestrians and cyclists.
If you’re injured despite taking precautions, our Encino personal injury lawyers can help you understand your options and pursue the compensation you deserve.
